Rescuers in Nepal and China are trying to find thousands of people who are still missing after huge floods in the Himalayas.
On Aug. 26, a glacier and rocks collapsed, sending a huge amount of ice, rock, mud and water into rivers. The floods caused great damage in both countries. By Sept. 2, at least 1,000 people had died, and more than 5,000 were still missing in Nepal. The missing people included 592 foreigners and 933 workers at hydropower plants. In Tibet, China, 16 people had died and 546 were missing.
Rescuers are working to find people trapped in villages, mountains and hydropower tunnels. Foreign rescue teams are also helping.
The floods destroyed many buildings, roads and bridges. Bad weather and rising water are making rescue work difficult. Scientists say the glacier collapse may be linked to climate change.
