Chinese car companies are looking at Japan’s car market. Their sales growth in China is slowing. They also face high tariffs on their electric cars in the U.S. and Europe.
Chinese company BYD made a new small electric car called the Racco only for the Japanese market. It was made with help from a former Nissan engineer. The car has automatic sliding doors and other useful features for families, such as an umbrella stand and a cup holder.
BYD sold about 4.6 million cars around the world last year. It became the world’s biggest maker of electric cars, selling more than its U.S. rival Tesla.
Japan does not have high tariffs on Chinese electric cars. BYD is working with Japanese companies to open car dealerships across Japan. The company hopes to gradually win more customers in the country.
