A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit Kyushu on July 28. The quake killed many people and left others injured or missing. It reached the highest level, 7, on Japan’s earthquake intensity scale.
In Kumamoto Prefecture, part of an Aeon Mall shopping center collapsed, trapping people inside. Officials said the collapse may have happened after a gas leak caused an explosion. A train also came off the tracks and tipped onto its side at Yatsushiro Station. At the famous Kumamoto Castle, some stone walls were damaged. The castle is still being repaired after a powerful earthquake in 2016.
Many people said the strong shaking reminded them of that earlier disaster. One town official said he saw roof tiles falling from nearby houses and felt very scared because it brought back memories of the deadly 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
