A new maglev bullet train line in Japan can now move forward after Shizuoka Prefecture gave its approval on July 7.
The project was delayed for many years because people in Shizuoka were worried about possible damage to the environment.
In 2017, former governor Heita Kawakatsu opposed the project. He was worried about the natural environment in the Southern Alps and the water levels of the Oi River. Some people feared that building the railway could lower the river’s water levels. This could affect farming, power generation and daily life in the area.
Shizuoka governor Yasutomo Suzuki said talks and environmental studies have made progress.
The maglev line will connect Tokyo and Nagoya in about 40 minutes. The 286-kilometer line will pass through several prefectures.
