Food insecurity is a big problem. In 2025, about 645 million people around the world suffered from hunger. But even for people who can eat, food costs are rising. Climate change is ruining crops. Nearly 3 billion people cannot afford to buy healthy foods for their families.
An NPO called Table For Two is working to address this challenge. Table For Two is an organization that connects dining tables in industrialized countries like Japan with those in developing countries. “Sharing the table is linked to sharing a better life together,” says Risa Okonogi, who works at Table For Two. “We want to connect children in Japan with children in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere through healthy, nutritious food.”
Table For Two was launched in Japan in 2007. Says Okonogi: “When Table For Two started, food insecurity seemed far away. But now, more people know about problems like obesity.” Okonogi explains that while one in 12 people in the world don’t have enough to eat, “about two in five people eat too many high-calorie foods. They also don’t get enough exercise.” This shows that eating too much is a global problem.
Okonogi encourages us to think of the world as many little tables where we can share a good meal with someone in another country. “We have a program called TFT. Every time someone chooses something healthy from a restaurant menu or a grocery store, ¥20 will be donated to “kyushoku (school meals)” in developing countries.” Surprisingly, ¥20 is enough to pay for one tray of kyushoku, says Okonogi. “This way, every time you sit down to eat a meal that’s part of TFT, you are also inviting someone in a developing country to eat with you.”
At Table For Two, there is also a program called “Onigiri Action.” This is held every autumn. “Every time you eat an onigiri, take a photo and post it to the program,” says Okonogi. “One onigiri photo will provide five school meals for children in developing countries.”
Onigiri Action is very popular among elementary and junior high school kids in Japan. “Everyone knows what onigiri is. It is a symbol of good food and loving care. Onigiri comes in many shapes and flavors. It’s very photogenic.”
By taking and posting photos, children can take part in TFT’s efforts to bring food security to the world. “Before, we thought of health as a personal matter. Now, health is a planetary concern.”
Okonogi sums up : “It’s also important to know how to choose the right foods and to cook at home. We hold workshops to teach Japanese junior and senior high school students these skills. We sincerely believe that to eat well is to live well.”
