For many people, science was their least favorite school subject. But science can be tons of fun, even if your science grade is low. “Science is great because it lets you see the world in a different way,” says Genki Ichioka, better known as “Genki Sensei.” He is a self-styled “science artist” who wants to change Japan for the better through science. Genki Sensei runs a very popular YouTube channel called GENKI LABO, which he launched in 2019. “I’ve been involved in science education for 20 years,” he says. “I’ve had great responses from kids and parents. Some of the kids who watched my channel have gone on to become scientists or get great jobs at major companies. That makes me very happy.”
On GENKI LABO, Genki Sensei has shared eye-popping experiments, gone on scientific field trips and appeared in the media. “I want to help people discover the science that is behind almost everything in life,” says Genki Sensei. “When you figure out how things work, you understand life better,” he says. “Curiosity, or the wish to know why things happen, is what makes us human.”
Genki Sensei says he runs the Labo on two basic beliefs: “Number one is that science makes daily life more interesting. Number two is that science lets you take control of your own health and welfare. For example, when you learn why storms and natural disasters happen, that knowledge can help to protect yourself and your family.”
In everyday life, Genki Sensei may ask himself: “Why does sunscreen become transparent when applied to the skin? How does sunscreen protect my skin from ultraviolet rays ? After asking myself these questions, I read the list of ingredients on the back and research the chemicals. You can do that, too. Finding the answers can help you choose the sunscreen that works best for you. Remember that everything in your life — everything! — is somehow connected to science.”
GENKI LABO can also help you with your summer homework. “We have a program called Ouchi Labo,” says Genki Sensei. “It’s a box packed with a variety of experiments. This will be delivered to your door every month. These experiments can help you become an amateur scientist in a field of your choosing. For example, if you’re interested in water, you can be a water scientist. If music is your thing, you can experiment with sound. Ouchi Labo helps you discover what you want to do, and who you want to be.”
In the future, Genki Sensei hopes to conduct his experiments in outer space. “I want to do that on the International Space Station,” he says. Stay tuned for more of Genki Sensei’s scientific adventures.

多くの人にとって、理科は学校で一番苦手な教科だった。しかし、理科の成績が低くても、科学はとても楽しいものになり得る。「科学は、世界を違った見方で見ることができるから素晴らしいんです」と、市岡元気さん、通称「元気先生」は話す。元気先生は、自らを「サイエンスアーティスト」と称し、科学を通して日本をよりよい社会に変えたいと考えている。元気先生は、2019年に開設した人気YouTubeチャンネル「GENKI LABO」を運営している。「私は20年間、科学教育に携わってきました。子どもたちや親御さんから、とても大きな反響がありました。私のチャンネルを見ていた子どもたちの中には、その後、科学者になったり、大手企業に就職したりした子もいます。それがとてもうれしいです」と話す。 GENKI LABOでは、元気先生は目を見張るような実験を紹介したり、科学に関するフィールドワークに出かけたり、メディアに出演したりしている。「私は、生活のほとんどすべてのことに隠れている科学を、人々に発見してもらいたいんです」と元気先生は話す。「物事がどのように働いているのかが分かると、人生についてもっと理解できるようになります」と言う。「好奇心、つまり、なぜ物事が起こるのかを知りたいという気持ちこそが、人間らしさをつくるものです」 元気先生は、LABOを運営する上で、2つの基本的な考えを持っているという。「1つ目は、科学によって日常生活がもっと面白くなるということです。2つ目は、科学によって自分自身の健康や幸福を自分で管理できるようになるということです。例えば、嵐や自然災害がなぜ起こるのかを学べば、その知識が自分や家族を守るのに役立ちます」 日常生活の中で、元気先生はこんな疑問を自分に投げかけることがあるという。「なぜ日焼け止めは肌に塗ると透明になるんだろう？　日焼け止めはどうやって紫外線から肌を守っているんだろう？　こうした疑問を持ったら、私は容器の裏にある成分表示を読んで、その化学物質について調べます。皆さんも同じことができます。答えを見つけることで、自分に最も合った日焼け止めを選ぶのに役立ちます。皆さんの生活にあるものは――本当にすべてが――何らかの形で科学とつながっていることを覚えておいてください」 GENKI LABOは、夏休みの宿題にも役立つ。「『おうちラボ』というプログラムがあります」と元気先生は話す。「さまざまな実験が詰まった箱で、毎月、自宅に届けられます。これらの実験を通して、自分が選んだ分野のアマチュア科学者になることができます。例えば、水に興味があるなら、水の科学者になれます。音楽が好きなら、音について実験できます。おうちラボは、自分が何をしたいのか、そしてどんな人になりたいのかを見つけるのに役立ちます」 将来、元気先生は宇宙空間で実験を行ないたいと考えている。「国際宇宙ステーションでやってみたいです」と話す。これからも、元気先生のさらなる科学の冒険に注目していよう。
