Did you know that Italy has the most UNESCO World Heritage sites in the world? It has 62 sites, while Japan has 27 and is ranked at 11th place. The newest addition is the Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara in Nara Prefecture, added in late July. Japan’s World Heritage list continues to grow, site by site.
“Learning about World Heritage sites can be quite rewarding,” says Shimpei Fujimoto of World Heritage Academy in Japan. “Understanding a World Heritage site before visiting makes the experience more meaningful.” His colleague, Keisuke Yoshida agrees. “Seeing it in real life is even more impressive when you know its history.”
What is it like working at World Heritage Academy? It is an NPO that seeks to promote societal interest in World Heritage sites. Fujimoto explains that World Heritage Academy also manages and operates the Sekaken, or Test of World Heritage Study. This test was set up in 2006. “As of 2025, over 400,000 Japanese, ranging from teenagers to their 90s, took the test to hone their knowledge of history and heritage worldwide,” says Fujimoto.
In 2026, there were 1,273 World Heritage sites on the globe. Many of them have become famous tourist spots. “World Heritage sites bring in a lot of tourism for a country. They also help protect the environment,” says Fujimoto. “That’s because world heritage sites cannot be torn down.” However, he adds that construction projects around a World Heritage site may endanger its status. “Since UNESCO began inscribing sites on the World Heritage List in 1978, three sites have been struck off the list. That was because the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage site had been damaged due to construction, landscape degradation, or resource development. Such a case is rare, but it can happen.”
World Heritage sites provide a good opportunity to learn about the world and its history. Fujimoto and Yoshida say there’s also a chance to learn English. “The information about each World Heritage site provided by UNESCO is written in English and French. Practice reading it in English, and your skills will improve. Knowledge about these sites is also a great conversation opener. It’s easier to make foreign friends when you know about their country’s World Heritage sites.”
Do Fujimoto and Yoshida have personal World Heritage recommendations? “For me, it’s Mount Fuji,” says Fujimoto. “Everyone thinks it’s a natural heritage, but it’s actually a cultural heritage site. Mount Fuji is deeply linked to Japanese religion, art and history.” For Yoshida, it’s “Historic Centre of Rome. It’s not just about the ruins but Italian art, culture and history. You can enjoy all these while eating delicious Roman pizza, pasta and gelato!”

イタリアが世界で最も多くの世界遺産を持つ国だということを知っていただろうか。イタリアには62件の世界遺産があり、日本は27件で11位にランクされている。最新の登録は、7月下旬に加わった奈良県の「飛鳥・藤原の宮都」だ。日本の世界遺産リストは、一つずつ増え続けている。 「世界遺産について学ぶことは、とても有意義なことです」と、日本の世界遺産アカデミーの藤本真平さんは話す。「訪れる前に世界遺産について理解しておくと、より意味のある体験になります」。同僚の吉田渓介さんも同意する。「歴史を知っていると、実際に見たときの感動はさらに大きくなります」 世界遺産アカデミーで働くとは、どのようなことなのだろうか。同団体は、世界遺産への社会的な関心を高めることを目指すNPOだ。藤本さんによると、世界遺産アカデミーは「世界遺産検定」、つまり世界遺産について学ぶための検定試験の運営も行なっている。この検定は2006年に始まった。「2025年までに、10代から90代までの40万人以上の日本人が、世界の歴史や遺産についての知識を深めるためにこの検定を受けました」と藤本さんは話す。 2026年、世界には1,273件の世界遺産があった。その多くが有名な観光地になっている。「世界遺産は、その国に多くの観光客を呼び込みます。また、環境を守ることにも役立ちます」と藤本さんは話す。「世界遺産は取り壊すことができないからです」。しかし、世界遺産の周辺で行なわれる建設工事が、その登録を危うくする可能性もあるという。「ユネスコが1978年に世界遺産リストへの登録を始めて以来、3件の世界遺産がリストから削除されました。建設や景観の悪化、資源開発によって、世界遺産が持つ顕著な普遍的価値が損なわれたためです。このようなケースはまれですが、起こる可能性はあります」 世界遺産は、世界やその歴史について学ぶよい機会を与えてくれる。藤本さんと吉田さんによると、英語を学ぶ機会にもなるという。「それぞれの世界遺産についてユネスコが提供している情報は、英語とフランス語で書かれています。英語で読む練習をすれば、英語力が伸びるでしょう。また、こうした遺産についての知識は、会話を始めるきっかけにもなります。外国にある世界遺産について知っていれば、外国人の友達を作りやすくなります」 藤本さんと吉田さんには、おすすめの世界遺産があるのだろうか。 「私なら富士山です」と藤本さん。「誰もが自然遺産だと思っていますが、実際には文化遺産です。富士山は日本の宗教や芸術、歴史と深く結びついています」 吉田さんが挙げるのは「ローマ歴史地区」だ。「遺跡だけではありません。イタリアの芸術、文化、歴史についても知ることができます。おいしいローマ風のピザやパスタ、ジェラートを食べながら、そのすべてを楽しめますよ！」
