For many students, the school library is not the best place to hang out. It’s often too quiet. And too full of books they don’t want to read. Many school libraries are just not fun.
But some librarians want to change that. Meet Kyoko Murakami, who is a certified school librarian. She works at Tokyo Gakugei University’s Setagaya Junior High School. There’s very little that Murakami doesn’t know about books, students, and school libraries. “The school library brings together many, many books in one space. That’s a special thing to see in the modern world.”
It’s true. Real books are being replaced by smartphones and tablets. People hardly ever read printed words these days. In Japan and around the world, there are fewer and fewer bookstores. But Murakami thinks that books are still important, especially for young people. “Physical books will touch your mind in a way that technology cannot,” she says.
Murakami has been a school librarian for decades. “My grandchild is in elementary school now and I asked what the library was like. The answer was: ‘It’s so quiet.’ I don’t think a school library should be silent. Of course, if you like, you can come to study in silence. But a lot of students say they can study better with other people talking around them.”
Thanks to Murakami, Setagaya Junior High School’s library is a fun, open, and welcoming space. Students come here on lunch breaks to hang out, read, or play board games. Yes, Murakami’s library is equipped with board games like shogi (Japanese chess). There is also a lot of manga here. There are round tables and comfortable chairs. Talking is allowed, and so is laughing with your friends. As long as you’re not making trouble, it’s OK to just be yourself.
Over the years, Murakami’s library has surprised parents and visitors. “I get asked how I managed to keep the place peaceful. I guess it’s because students are allowed their freedom. If there’s trouble, the teachers will have to come and patrol the library. I told the students that they needed to respect library rules if they wanted to use the place freely.”
The result is a wonderful library with a great selection of books and manga. How can other schools follow this example? “I encourage the teachers to use the books here to supplement what they’re teaching in class,” replies Murakami. “Textbook learning is important, but reading books on that same subject will take you further.”
Generations of students at Setagaya Junior High have fond memories of Murakami and her library. “You can find books here that may change your life,” she says. “That’s something to treasure when you become an adult.”

多くの生徒にとって、学校の図書館は最もくつろげる場所ではない。静かすぎることが多く、読みたいとは思わない本であふれているからだ。学校図書館の多くは、あまり楽しい場所ではない。 しかし、その状況を変えようとしている司書もいる。東京学芸大学附属世田谷中学校で働く、司書資格を持つ村上恭子さんを紹介する。村上さんは、本や生徒、学校図書館についてほとんど知らないことがないと言えるほどの人物だ。「学校図書館には、多くの本が一つの空間に集まっています。それは現代社会において特別な光景だと思います」 確かにその通りである。紙の本はスマートフォンやタブレットに置き換えられつつあり、人々が印刷された文章を読む機会はほとんどなくなってきている。日本でも世界でも、本屋の数は減少している。しかし村上さんは、本は今でも重要であり、特に若い人にとって大切だと考えている。「紙の本は、テクノロジーでは得られない形で心に触れることができます」 村上さんは何十年も学校司書として働いてきた。「今は小学生の孫がいるのですが、図書館がどんな場所か聞いてみました。答えは『とても静か』でした。私は学校図書館は静かであるべきではないと思います。もちろん、静かに勉強したい人はそうして構いません。しかし、多くの生徒は、周囲で少し話し声がある方が勉強しやすいと言います」 村上さんのおかげで、世田谷中学校の図書館は楽しく、開かれた、居心地のよい空間になっている。生徒たちは昼休みにここへ来て、友達と過ごしたり、本を読んだり、ボードゲームをしたりする。そう、村上さんの図書館には将棋などのボードゲームも置かれている。また漫画も多く揃っている。丸いテーブルや快適な椅子もあり、会話も、友達と笑いあうことも許されている。問題を起こさない限り、自分らしく過ごしてよい場所になっている。 長年にわたって、村上さんの図書館は保護者や来訪者を驚かせてきた。「どうやってこの場所の静けさを保っているのかとよく聞かれます。たぶん、生徒に自由が認められているからだと思います。もし問題が起きれば、先生たちが図書館を見回ることになります。生徒には、自由に利用したいなら図書館のルールを尊重する必要があると伝えています」 その結果、豊富な本と漫画を備えた素晴らしい図書館が実現している。他の学校は、どのようにこの事例にならうことができるのだろうか。「授業で学んでいる内容を補うために、ここにある本を使うことを先生たちに勧めています。教科書での学習は重要ですが、同じテーマの本を読むことで、さらに理解が深まります」 世田谷中学校の多くの世代の生徒たちは、村上さんとその図書館に良い思い出を持っている。「ここには、人生を変えるかもしれない本があります。それは大人になったときに大切にすべきものです」
