A new survey by Rohto Pharmaceutical shows that many young people in Japan do not want children. It asked 400 unmarried men and women between the ages of 18 and 29 about their thoughts on having children.
The results show that 62.6% of them said they do not want children. This number has increased by 18% since 2020, when the annual survey first asked the question. For the first time, more women than men said they do not want children. About 65% of women and 60.7% of men said this.
Many people said they worry about money. Over 70% of women and about 63% of men said raising a child would cost too much. Some women also worry that having a child could hurt their careers.
Even people who want children now plan to have them later in life. Fewer young people want a child before age 30.

ロート製薬の新たな調査により、日本の若者の多くが子どもを望んでいないことが明らかになった。これは、18歳から29歳までの未婚の男女400人を対象に、子どもを持つことに対する考えを尋ねたものである。 その結果、62.6％が「子どもは欲しくない」と回答した。この割合は、同様の質問を初めて行なった2020年から18ポイント増加している。今回の調査では初めて、男性よりも女性のほうが子どもを望まない割合が高くなり、女性は約65％、男性は60.7％であった。 理由として多く挙げられたのは、経済的な不安である。女性の70%以上、男性の約63％が、子どもを育てるには費用がかかりすぎると感じている。また、出産や育児が自身のキャリアに影響することを懸念する女性もみられた。 さらに、子どもを望んでいる人であっても、出産の時期を後ろ倒しにする傾向が見られる。30歳までに子どもを持ちたいと考える若者は減少している。
