Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her party, the Liberal Democratic Party, won a huge victory in Japan’s election. They won 316 seats in the Lower House. With their partner party, they now control about 75% of all seats. This gives Takaichi great power and a chance to stay prime minister for many years.
With a two-thirds majority, the government can pass important laws even if the Upper House says no. The opposition parties are very weak and divided, so they cannot stop her plans.
However, having too many new members may make the party hard to manage. She also needs close helpers she can trust.
Takaichi says she wants to cut food taxes, strengthen national security, and change the Constitution. People are now watching what she will do with her great power.
