China’s giant panda twins, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, returned to China on Jan. 28 after growing up in Japan. They were born in 2021 at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo and became very popular with visitors. They were the last remaining pandas in Japan.
On Jan. 28, the pandas arrived safely in Sichuan Province, China. They landed at an airport in Chengdu late at night and then traveled by truck to a panda center in Yaan.
At the center, doctors checked their health. Photos showed workers in white suits carefully moving the pandas in special boxes.
Many people in Japan felt sad to say goodbye. The panda center said the twins helped build friendship between China and Japan.
Their return comes during a time of tension between the two countries, but many people hope the pandas will continue to be a symbol of peace and friendship.

中国のジャイアントパンダの双子、シャオシャオとレイレイが1月28日、日本で育った後、中国へ返還された。2頭は2021年に東京・上野動物園で誕生し、多くの来園者に親しまれてきた。日本に残っていた最後のパンダであった。 1月28日、2頭は中国・四川省に無事到着した。深夜に成都の空港に降り立ち、その後トラックで雅安にあるパンダ保護研究センターへ移送された。 センターでは獣医師による健康チェックが行われた。公開された写真では、白い防護服を着た職員が専用の箱で慎重にパンダを運ぶ様子が確認できる。 日本では別れを惜しむ声が多く聞かれた。パンダセンターは、双子の存在が日中の友好関係を深める役割を果たしてきたとコメントした。 両国関係に緊張が続く中での返還となったが、多くの人々は、2頭が今後も平和と友情の象徴であり続けることを願っている。
