The kanji “kuma,” which means bear, was chosen as Japan’s Kanji of the Year for 2025. Many people voted for this word because bears caused serious problems during the year. Japan saw a record number of bear attacks, and some people were injured or killed. Bears were also seen in urban areas, which made many people feel scared. Because of this, some schools were closed and events were canceled. In the countryside, bears damaged crops, hurting local farmers.
Another reason people chose “kuma” was the attention on giant pandas, which are also bears. Four pandas were sent back to China from a zoo in Wakayama Prefecture. The last two pandas in Japan, at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, will return to China next year.
Every year since 1995, people vote for one kanji that best shows the mood of the year.

「熊（くま）」という漢字が、2025年の「今年の漢字」に選ばれた。多くの人がこの字に投票した背景には、一年を通してクマによる深刻な被害が相次いだことがある。日本ではクマによる人身被害が過去最多となり、負傷者や死亡者も出た。クマが市街地に出没する事例も相次ぎ、多くの人々を怖がらせた。その影響で、学校が休校になったり、各地のイベントが中止されたりする事態も起きた。農村部ではクマによる農作物被害が発生し、地域の農家に大きな打撃を与えた。 「熊」が選ばれたもう一つの理由は、同じクマの仲間であるジャイアントパンダへの関心の高まりである。和歌山県の動物園からは4頭のパンダが中国に返還された。さらに、東京・上野動物園にいる最後の2頭のパンダも、来年中国に返還される予定だ。 「今年の漢字」は、その年の世相を最もよく表す一字を選ぶもので、1995年から毎年実施されている。
