Lee Jae-myung was officially declared the new president of South Korea on June 4. He is the liberal candidate from the Democratic Party.

Lee received 49% of the vote. Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party was his main rival. Kim got 41% of the vote.

Lee gave a short speech near the National Assembly. He thanked voters and promised to “restore democracy.” He also said that uniting the country would be his top priority. “Even if politics divides us, the people themselves should not be divided,” he said. “The president’s job is not to rule, but to bring people together.”

The election was held on June 3. This was six months after the former President Yoon Suk Yeol briefly declared martial law. Yoon was impeached in December and removed from office in April.
