Crazy Coco is an English-speaking comedienne. She is signed with Yoshimoto Kogyo, one of the top agencies in the Japanese entertainment industry. “English speaking comedians are very rare,” says Coco. “I’m thankful that I’ve found my place.”
Coco didn’t start out as a comedienne. When she graduated from university, Coco joined a trading company. “But I was bored with my job and feeling down. My friend told me there was an opening for a CA (cabin attendant) at a foreign airline. She was already working there as a CA. She looked so happy, talking in English to her colleagues who were from all over the world. I thought, ‘wow, she’s so cool!’”
Actually, Coco’s friend had studied with her in Australia for 10 months on a study-abroad program. “My English skills were good but I didn’t have much opportunity to use them at the trading company,” says Coco. At this point she was determined to change her workplace and to do something “that will give me joy,” she says. “I’ve always had a positive attitude. Being from Osaka, I love all things that are interesting and funny.”
Coco became a CA for a foreign airline when she was 27 years old. “People started calling me Crazy Japanese,” laughs Coco. “I borrowed from my own nickname and became Crazy Coco.”
She worked as a CA for 4.5 years before returning to Japan. “After working for a foreign airline, I worked as an English education consultant and did a few other jobs too.” At a foreign airline, she had enjoyed a good salary and working conditions. In Japan, the pay was much less. However, that didn’t stop here from searching for a future that suited her. She took to posting on YouTube to supplement her income and then auditioned to become a comedienne.
During her life journey, Coco has always studied to maintain her English skills. “Currently, I’m studying on Sayaka Kobayashi’s site called ‘AGEL English.’ It’s a site for busy people with day jobs. People who study here try to be the best they can, and come to classes well prepared. I became serious about studying and improving my English skills, especially my range of vocabulary.”
What happens when you don’t have time to study? “I try to optimize whatever time I have. Even watching just one Netflix episode provides inspiration and English knowledge.”
Coco says that English has always been a partner and a friend. “One of my friends was stuck in a rut in her life in Japan. She was depressed and thought it was all her fault. But she could speak English so she went to Malaysia. Now she’s very happy.”
“If plan A doesn’t work out, English skills will help you to work out plan B. Life is just better with English.”

英語を武器に活躍するお笑い芸人、CRAZY COCOさんは、日本の大手芸能事務所である吉本興業に所属している。COCOさんは、「英語を話す芸人はとても珍しいです。自分の居場所を見つけられたことに感謝しています」と語る。 しかし、COCOさんは最初から芸人を目指していたわけではない。大学卒業後は商社に就職したものの、「仕事に退屈して気分も落ち込んでいました」という。そんなとき、友人から外資系航空会社の客室乗務員（CA）の募集があることを紹介された。「その友人はすでにCAとして働いていて、世界中から来た同僚と英語で話す姿がとても楽しそうで、かっこいいと思っていました」と振り返る。 実はその友人とは、オーストラリアへの10カ月の留学をともにしていた。「英語力はあったのですが、商社ではそれを使う機会があまりありませんでした」。そこでCOCOさんは、「自分が楽しいと思えることをしたい」と転職を決意した。「もともと前向きな性格で、大阪出身なので面白いことが大好きなんです」と話す。 27歳で外資系航空会社のCAとなり、「クレイジー・ジャパニーズ」と呼ばれるようになったことが芸名の由来となった。 約4年半勤務した後、日本に帰国。「その後は英語教育コンサルタントなど、いくつかの仕事を経験しました」という。外資系では高い給与と良い労働環境に恵まれていたが、日本では収入が下がった。それでも自分に合った将来を模索し続け、YouTubeでの発信を始め、収入を補い、やがて芸人のオーディションに挑戦した。 人生の中で、COCOさんは常に英語学習を続けてきた。「現在は小林さやかさんの『AGEL English』で学んでいます。忙しい社会人向けのサイトで、受講者は意識が高く、しっかり準備して授業に臨んでいます」。特に語彙力の強化に力を入れているという。 勉強時間が取れないときはどうするのか。「限られた時間を最大限に活用します。Netflixを1話見るだけでも、英語の知識やインスピレーションが得られるんです」と話す。 COCOさんにとって英語は「パートナーであり友人」のような存在である。「日本で行き詰まり、落ち込んでいた友人がいたのですが、英語を話せたことでマレーシアに渡り、今ではとても幸せに暮らしています」という。 「プランAがうまくいかなくても、英語があればプランBを見つけることができます。英語があることで、人生はより良いものになるんです」。
