Meet Ghib Ojisan, who operates a successful vlogging channel on YouTube with over 355,000 subscribers. Ghib Ojisan is Japanese, but he has spent most of his life outside Japan. He’s now based in Singapore where he makes vlogs about everyday life, local food and much more, from the viewpoint of a Japanese who has traveled around the world.
Ghib Ojisan’s vlogs are in English and he is completely bilingual. “My family moved to California when I was 2 years old and we didn’t return until I was 19,” explains Ghib Ojisan. “So I never experienced the Japanese education system. When I returned to Japan for university, I met with a lot of culture shock. After graduating, I became an employee at a Japanese company. But I couldn’t handle the pressure and the rigid company culture. So I quit my job and went backpacking around the world with my guitar.”
Ghib Ojisan traveled to 27 countries in one year. He decided to settle in Singapore. “I realized the virtues of Japan after leaving it,” he says. “I’m still glad I left. By looking at Japan from outside, I could see what makes it special. If you want to change your life, I recommend traveling outside the country.”
Ghib Ojisan goes on: “The Japanese are highly educated and civilized. They are also mentally strong. When the East Japan Earthquake hit in 2011, the Japanese followed the rules and helped and supported each other. I think we should be proud of that.”
He adds that “the international community loves Japan. And because I live in Singapore, I know how the Singaporeans like and respect Japan. Even though there’s bad wartime history between the two nations, we have become friends.”
About Singapore, Ghib Ojisan says “it is a very diverse society. A melting pot of different nationalities and cultures. Everyone has a different background, but the common language is English. In the school system, every subject is taught in English.” Students get to choose a foreign language to study during the last years of elementary school, he says. “The English in Singapore is often called ‘Singlish,’ and it is not formal English but a mixture of Mandarin and Malay. Unlike the Japanese, no one really cares if your English is perfect or not. They just say what they want to say.”
Like Ghib Ojisan, many Japanese teens may feel restricted and cramped in Japan. “You can always change your life,” he says. “Practice saying what you really think. Persuade the people around you to listen and pay attention to you. Also, remember that a university degree will give you more life options, including a chance to live and work abroad.”

登録者35万5000人超の人気YouTubeチャンネルを運営するジブおじさん。日本人でありながら、人生の大半を海外で過ごしてきた。現在はシンガポールを拠点に、世界を旅してきた日本人の視点から、日常生活やローカルフードなどを英語で発信している。 ジブおじさんのVlogは英語で、彼は完全にバイリンガルだ。２歳で家族とともにカリフォルニアへ移住し、19歳まで帰国しなかったという。「だから日本の学校教育を経験していません。大学進学のために日本へ戻ったときは、大きなカルチャーショックを受けました」と振り返る。卒業後は日本企業に就職したが、プレッシャーや厳格な企業文化に耐えきれず退職。ギターを手に１年間で27カ国をバックパックで巡った。 最終的にシンガポールに定住することを決めた。「日本を離れて初めて、日本の良さに気づきました」と語る。「それでも、外に出てよかったと思っています。外から日本を見ることで、何が特別なのかが分かりました。人生を変えたいなら、海外に出ることを勧めます」。 「日本人は教育水準が高く、教養もあり、精神的にも強いです。2011年の東日本大震災の時には、ルールを守り、助け合いました。誇るべきことです」と強調する。 また、「国際社会は日本のことがとても好きです。シンガポールに住んでいるからこそ、現地の人々がどれほど日本を好み、尊敬しているかが分かります。二国間には、戦時中における難しい過去はありますが、今では友人のような関係になっています」と話す。 シンガポールについては、「多様性に富んだ社会であり、さまざまな国籍や文化が混ざり合う“るつぼ”です。すべての人が違う背景を持っているんです」と語る。共通語は英語で、学校ではすべての科目が英語で教えられる。小学校高学年になると外国語を一つ選択して学ぶという。 「シンガポールの英語は“シングリッシュ”と呼ばれることが多いです。フォーマルな英語ではなく、中国語やマレー語が混ざった独特の表現です。日本人と違い、英語が完璧かどうかをあまり気にしません。ただ言いたいことを言うのです」。 日本で窮屈さを感じている若者に向け、「人生はいつでも変えられます。本音を言う練習をしてほしいです。周囲の人に自分の声を聞いてもらえるよう説得することも大切です。そして大学の学位は、海外で働き暮らす可能性を含め、人生の選択肢を広げてくれます」とエールを送った。
