Some people may think that English fluency can only be achieved by studying abroad. Sota, who runs the English-learning website eigonosota.com, disagrees. “English fluency is hard, whether you study in Japan or go abroad,” says Sota. “Either way, you have to work hard.”
Sota has never studied overseas but has authored several popular books on English learning and has over 200,000 followers across four social media platforms. “I wanted to demonstrate that English skills can be developed while staying right here in Japan,” explains Sota.
He has always loved studying and learning English. “My English teacher in junior high school had great pronunciation skills. I was so impressed,” he recalls. Sota also learned from another wonderful English instructor, this time in cram school. “This teacher made English learning a real joy. I benefited from an excellent English education, in both regular school and cram school.”
Sota’s road to English fluency was never easy. “I worked very, very hard,” he says. Not only did he study hard at school, Sota started listening to English language podcasts. “This was a time when few people in Japan knew what podcasts were. I combed through iTunes to pick out the topics that sounded interesting. I was still a student and couldn’t afford expensive study materials, so I listened to podcasts instead. It didn’t matter if I didn’t understand the phrases, I just listened.”
Sota always kept a pocket dictionary on hand for looking up words and phrases. “I spent four hours a day commuting to university. I made full use of that time by listening to podcasts, using a dictionary, and looking out the window while translating what I saw into English in my head.” He discovered that “the vocabulary we learn in junior high and high school is very important. It forms the foundations of our English skills.”
On his journey to English fluency, Sota says he hit a wall. “It was when I was a freshman at university. I had worked so hard to pass the entrance exams and my reading and writing skills were good. But I had trouble with English conversation. I couldn’t speak the way I wanted to.” But Sota never thought of quitting. “I listened to podcasts, TED talks, watched movies and listened to Taylor Swift songs. I did everything possible to improve my English.”
Sota says there’s a big advantage to learning English without leaving Japan. “It puts you in a league of your own. Homegrown English skills will become your greatest strength.” He adds that having stayed in Japan has made him appreciate his national identity. “I take pride in speaking English as a Japanese. This is something I will always value.”

英語は留学しなければ身につかない、と考える人も少なくない。しかし、英語学習サイト「eigonosota.com」を運営する英会話コーチのそーたさんは、その考えに異を唱える。「英語が話せるようになるのは、日本にいても海外に行っても大変なことです。どちらにしても努力が必要です」と語る。 そーたさんは海外留学の経験がないにもかかわらず、英語学習に関する書籍を複数出版し、4つのSNS合わせて20万人以上のフォロワーを持つ。「日本にいながらでも英語力は伸ばせる、ということを示したかったんです」と話す。 彼はもともと勉強することや英語を学ぶことが大好きだった。「中学校の英語の先生の発音がとてもきれいで、感銘を受けました」と彼は振り返る。そーたさんは、その後、塾でも別のすばらしい英語講師から学んだ。「この先生のおかげで、英語を学ぶことが本当に楽しくなりました。学校と塾の両方で、質の高い英語教育を受けることができたんです」 一方で、英語習得の道のりは決して平坦ではなかった。「本当に必死に勉強しました」とそーたさんは言う。学生時代、授業での学習に加え、英語のポッドキャストを聴き始めた。当時、日本ではまだポッドキャストが広く知られていなかった。そーたさんは学生だったため、高価な教材を買う余裕がなく、iTunesで興味のある番組を探しては聴いていたという。内容が分からなくてもとにかく英語を耳に入れ続けた。 常にポケット辞書を持ち歩き、通学時間も学習に充てた。大学までの往復4時間の通学中、ポッドキャストを聴き、辞書を引き、車窓の景色を頭の中で英語に訳していたという。「中学・高校で学ぶ語彙はとても重要で、英語力の土台になる」と強調する。 大学1年生のとき、そーたさんは壁にぶつかった。入試対策で鍛えた読解力や筆記力には自信があったものの、英会話が思うようにできなかったという。それでも諦めることはなかった。「ポッドキャストやTEDトーク、映画、テイラー・スウィフトの曲などを聴きました。できることはすべてやりました」と語る。 そーたさんは、日本にいながら英語を学ぶことには大きな利点があると話す。「それは、唯一無二の強みになります。日本で身につけた英語力は最大の武器になるんです」。さらに、日本にとどまってきたからこそ、自身のアイデンティティに感謝するようになったという。「日本人として英語を話すことに誇りを持っています。この気持ちは、これからも大切にしていきたいです」と語った。
