Shannon Mahina Gorman is among the youngest actresses on the international film scene. She co-stars in the film Rental Family, which opens on Feb. 27, alongside the Oscar winner Brendan Fraser. The other cast members include the bilingual Takeshi Hira and Mari Yamamoto, as well as veteran Akira Emoto who studied English conversation to take on his role.
Shannon’s father is Irish and her mother is Japanese. Her parents own and run English schools in Saitama City. “I had always loved acting, singing and dancing,” says 12-year-old Shannon, who conducted this interview in English.
“I was very excited when I heard that there was a movie role about a girl who was half Japanese, like me. My mother suggested that I try out for it because she knew that I loved performing. I was so happy to pass the audition, and when I received the phone call telling me I had gotten that part, we all cried happy tears.”
Rental Family is about an American actor, Phillip (played by Brendan Fraser) who has lived and worked in Japan for many years. Lately, he can’t get any acting jobs, and agrees to work as a “rental American man.” He is hired as the fake dad of Mia (Shannon Mahina), whose single mother wants her to enroll in a good private school.
In the movie, Mia is bilingual and speaks naturally in English with Phillip. “I am the youngest of four siblings,” says Shannon. “And my brothers and sister are much older than me. For my audition, they helped me read through the script. My dad and mom gave me advice on how to pronounce the English words properly. My family were all very supportive and I really appreciated that.”
On the set, Shannon says that Hikari, the director of the film, helped her to develop the character of Mia. “I also learned a lot about acting from watching Brendan and Shino-san, who plays my mother. Brendan was very relaxed and joked around during break times but when the camera started rolling, his whole expressions changed. He was 100% focused and I was so inspired by his professionalism.”
Shannon wanted to know Mia better to become her in the film. “So I watched a lot of TV dramas and movies like Searchlight’s Gifted, to prepare for Mia. However, after watching them I realized that I had to look inside myself and try to imagine what Mia’s life would be like, and how she would react to the things that happen to her in the movie.”
“Before being in Rental Family, I didn’t really know what it was like to be lonely because I’m from a big family,” says Shannon. “But now I truly understand loneliness and the emotions that come from it, much better than I used to.”

ゴーマン シャノン 眞陽さんは、国際的な映画界で最年少クラスの女優の一人である。2月27日公開の映画『Rental Family（レンタル・ファミリー）』で、アカデミー賞俳優のブレンダン・フレイザーと共演する。共演者には、日英バイリンガルの平岳大、山本真理のほか、役作りのために英会話を学んだベテラン俳優の柄本明も名を連ねる。 眞陽さんの父はアイルランド人、母は日本人で、両親はさいたま市で英語教室を経営している。12歳の眞陽さんは本インタビューを英語で行ない、「昔から演技や歌、ダンスが大好きでした」と語る。 「自分と同じハーフの女の子の役がある映画だと聞いて、とてもワクワクしました。私が表現することが好きなのを知っていた母が、オーディションを受けてみたらと勧めてくれたんです。合格できて本当にうれしかったですし、役が決まったという電話を受けたときは、家族みんなでうれし泣きをしました」 『Rental Family』は、日本で長年暮らし働いてきたアメリカ人俳優フィリップ（ブレンダン・フレイザー）が主人公である。最近は仕事に恵まれず、「レンタル・アメリカ人」として働くことになる。彼は、良い私立学校に娘を入れたいと考えるシングルマザーに雇われ、美亜（眞陽さん）の“父親役”を演じる。 映画の中で美亜はバイリンガルで、フィリップと自然な英語で会話を交わす。「私は4人きょうだいの末っ子で、兄と姉はかなり年上です。オーディションのときは、みんなが台本の読み合わせを手伝ってくれました。英語の発音については、両親がアドバイスをくれました。家族がとても支えてくれて、本当に感謝しています」 撮影現場では、監督のHIKARIが美亜という役を深める手助けをしてくれたという。「ブレンダンや、母親役のしのさんの演技を見て、たくさん学びました。ブレンダンは休憩中はとてもリラックスして冗談も言うのですが、カメラが回ると表情が一変します。完全に役に集中していて、そのプロ意識に強く刺激を受けました」 眞陽さんは、美亜という人物をより深く理解するために準備を重ねた。「『Gifted』などのドラマや映画をたくさん観ました。最終的には、自分の内面を見つめて、美亜がどんな人生を送ってきたのか、映画の中で起こる出来事にどう反応するのかを想像することが大切だと気づきました」 「大家族で育ったので、『Rental Family』に出演する前は、孤独をあまり実感したことがありませんでした。でも今は、孤独とはどういうものか、そこから生まれる感情を以前よりずっと深く理解できるようになったと思います」と眞陽さんは語っている。
