For many people, writing is a pleasure. Some may keep personal diaries while others may try their hand at fantasy or fiction. But not everyone can become a professional writer. Essayist and translator Riko Murai says that writing full time and doing it for a living is “not all niceness and joy. Writing can be complicated and arduous.” At the same time, writing also “clears the mind and creates a space in the brain just for you and no one else.”
Writers are also readers. Murai says that one of the first steps to becoming a good writer is to be a good reader. “Reading broadens your perspective and nourishes your mind. I especially recommend reading physical books instead of online.”
But people have been saying for years that paper books are dying out. Murai says though that may be true, there’s still a demand for paper books and real book stores. “Words read on a paper page stimulate the brain and build intelligence. The time spent with a book is golden. You’ll also discover the joy of solitude. Being alone is not the same as being lonely.”
Murai herself has written many, many books. Her translations of American bestsellers like Into the Planet — My Life as a Cave Diver by Jill Heinerth and Thomas Thwaites’s Goat Man — How I Took a Holiday From Being Human are just two out of a pile of popular and well-read titles. Surprisingly, Murai has never studied translation or lived abroad. “I had always loved to read. I was reading in English since high school. It became natural for me to translate the sentences into Japanese, and once I began, I just kept going.”
Murai has also handled the rise of AI translations well. “AI is brilliant at translation. But every human translator has their own color and quirks that machines can’t emulate. At least, not yet.”
Murai’s own favorite genre is American true crime — specifically, serial killers. She loves how much research and hard work go into books about serial killers, especially Michelle McNamara’s Golden State Killer. In the future, she hopes to write her own crime novel series.
Murai has another channel for her writing, which are essays about family life written from her experiences of marriage, child-rearing and more recently, caring for aging parents and in-laws.
“Because family is such a sensitive subject, I try to minimize my use of real-life information. I think families come in many different forms, and each one can be special in its own way. A family can be loving and close-knit, or the opposite of that. As long as you’re not restricted, it’s all OK.”

多くの人にとって、書くことは喜びである。日記をつける人もいれば、ファンタジーやフィクションに挑戦する人もいる。しかし、誰もが職業作家になれるわけではない。エッセイストで翻訳家の村井理子さんは、終日文章を書いて生計を立てることは「楽しいことばかりではありません。執筆は複雑で骨の折れる作業です」と語る。一方で、書くことは「頭の中を整理し、自分だけの場所をつくる行為でもあります」と言う。 作家は同時に読者でもある。村井さんは「良い書き手になる第一歩は、良い読み手になることです」と話す。「読むことで視野が広がり、心が養われます。特に、電子ではなく、紙の本を読むことを勧めたいです」。 紙の本は消えつつあると言われて久しいが、村井さんは、紙の本と実店舗の書店には依然として需要があると考えている。「紙のページで読む言葉は脳を刺激し、知性を育てます。本と向き合う時間はかけがえのないものです。また“ひとりでいること”の豊かさにも気づけます。孤独とひとりは同じではありません」。 村井さんはこれまで数多くの本を執筆し、翻訳してきた。ジル・ハイナースの『イントゥ・ザ・プラネット（Into the Planet — My Life as a Cave Diver）』やトマス・トウェイツの『人間をお休みしてヤギになってみた結果（Goat Man — How I Took a Holiday From Being Human）』など、アメリカのベストセラー翻訳もその一部だ。意外なことに、彼女は翻訳を学んだことも、海外で暮らしたこともない。「とにかく読むことが好きでした。高校生のころから英語で本を読み、自然と“日本語に訳す”という行為が身につきました。いったん始めてみると、そのまま続いていきました」。 AI翻訳の台頭にも落ち着いて向き合っている。「AIの翻訳は本当に優秀です。ただ、人間の翻訳者にはそれぞれ固有の“色”があり、その癖や感性は機械には真似できません。少なくとも、今のところは」。 彼女が特に好むジャンルはアメリカの犯罪ドキュメンタリー、とりわけ連続殺人犯を扱う作品である。とてつもない調査量と労力が注ぎ込まれたジャンルであり、ミシェル・マクナマラの『黄金州の殺人鬼（Golden State Killer）』を特に高く評価している。将来は自身の犯罪小説シリーズを書きたいとも考えている。 また、結婚、子育て、そして最近では親や義父母の介護など、自身の経験をもとにした家族エッセイも執筆している。「家族はとても繊細なテーマなので、実際の情報はできるだけ控えています。家族の形は本当にさまざまで、どれも特別になり得ます。仲が良い家族もあれば、その逆もあります。大事なのは、縛られてさえいなければ、それでいいということです」。
