Meet the SYR Bros. — Sota, Yuta and Ryota Todokoro. They are an enormously popular English speaking trio whose YouTube channel @syrbros.fromtokyototheworld has gained over 106,000 subscribers.
The brothers’ channel is about Japan and Japanese culture. Many of the videos introduce Tokyo tourist spots like Asakusa and Sensoji. Others are about life as a Japanese kid and going to a regular Japanese school. They’ve also teamed up with non-Japanese kids living in Japan in an interesting episode titled: Life in Japan as a Muslim: What’s it Like?
To say that the SYR Bros. are fluent in English is like saying Tokyo is a big city. The brothers are incredibly good even though they have never actually lived or studied abroad. Eldest sibling Sota, in his first year of high school, says: “We grew up watching what the kids in the U.S. and U.K. were watching on TV and online. Our parents made sure that we were exposed to English at a very young age and we basically never stopped learning the language.”
At home, Sota first started talking to younger brother Yuta in English and the pair kept that up after Ryota was born. “We watched Disney movies and educational shows like Wild Kratts on YouTube,” explains Yuta. “English is front and center of our home environment.”
Outside the home, the brothers say they are perfectly OK with speaking Japanese with their friends and studying in Japanese in school. Once they get home however, “our English brain gets switched on,” says Sota. “We even listen to the news in English.”
Sota got the idea to start the channel at the start of the pandemic. “I wanted to make use of our English skills somehow. Then the pandemic happened and we all had to stay home. I wanted us to connect with the outside world and to get people interested in Japan.”
The brothers’ parents are in charge of filming, editing and uploading the videos. “They support us 100%,” says Sota. “When we were little, they gave us English books to read and videos to watch and now they produce our channel. We’re really grateful.”
When he’s fully grown up, Sota hopes to continue what he’s doing now — bridging the gap between Japan and the rest of the world. He wants to go to an overseas university, maybe in the U.S., saying he feels the U.S. fits him better.
Yuta, who is now in middle school, says, “I want to study in Europe someday. After that, I hope to get a job that will make full use of my English skills.” Ryota, 9, says, “I want to become an English teacher. And I would like to visit Canada.”
For these three brothers, the sky is the limit.

SYR Bros.こと富所三兄弟――Sotaさん、Yutaさん、Ryotaさんは、日本の文化を英語で発信する人気YouTubeチャンネル「@syrbros.fromtokyototheworld」を運営しており、登録者は10万6千人を超える。 彼らのチャンネルでは、日本や日本文化に関する動画を配信している。浅草や浅草寺など東京の観光スポットを紹介する動画のほか、日本の子どもとしての生活や一般的な学校生活をテーマにしたものもある。外国人の子どもと共演した「Life in Japan as a Muslim: What’s it Like?」と題する動画も人興味深い。 SYR Bros.が英語に堪能であることは、東京が大都市であると言うようなものだ。三兄弟は一度も海外に住んだことや留学経験がないにもかかわらず、驚くほどの英語力を持つ。長男のSotaさんは高校1年生で、「アメリカやイギリスの子どもたちが見ているテレビやオンライン動画を見ながら育ちました。両親が幼い頃から英語に触れさせてくれたので、学ぶことをほとんどやめることがありませんでした」と語る。 家庭では、Sotaさんが次男のYutaさんに英語で話しかけることから始まり、三男のRyotaさんが生まれてからも続けている。Yutaさんは「ディズニー映画やYouTubeの教育番組『Wild Kratts』などを見て育ちました。家の中では英語が中心です」と説明する。 家庭外では友達と日本語で話したり、学校で日本語で学んだりすることに問題はないが、家に帰ると「英語脳のスイッチが入ります」とSotaさんは言う。「ニュースも英語で聞きます」とのことだ。 Sotaさんがチャンネルを始めるきっかけとなったのはコロナ禍の初期である。「英語力をどうにかして生かしたいと思いました。コロナ禍で家にいる時間が増えたので、外の世界とつながり、日本に興味を持ってもらいたかったんです」と振り返る。 動画の撮影、編集、アップロードは両親が担当している。「両親は100％サポートしてくれています。小さい頃は英語の本や動画を与えてくれ、今ではチャンネル運営までしてくれています。本当に感謝しています」とSotaさんは語る。 将来、Sotaさんは今の活動を続け、世界と日本の架け橋になりたいとしている。海外の大学、特にアメリカで学びたいと語り、「自分にはアメリカが合っています」と話す。中学生のYutaさんは「いつかヨーロッパで学び、その後は英語力を最大限に生かせる仕事に就きたいです」と話す。9歳のRyotaさんは「英語の先生になりたいです。そしてカナダにも行ってみたいです」と語る。 この三兄弟にとって、可能性は無限大である。
