Haichi is an educational YouTuber with over 2.17 million subscribers. He graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University and has always been enthusiastic about teaching. He launched his YouTube channel @toaruotoko in 2012 and since then, has taught countless students from elementary through high school.
Haichi’s classes are famed for being learner-friendly and easy to understand. Since 2020, he has extended his field from just teaching classes to listening to and advising his students. He also works as a lecturer and radio personality.
“In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic changed everything, especially for children and teens,” explains Haichi. “There was so much stress everywhere. Many parents saw their incomes dwindle. Some kids told me that they gave up their plans to attend a private school because their parents could no longer afford the tuition.”
Others came to him with personal worries about relationships or bullying. “I could sense that a lot of kids were troubled and needed help,” he says. “But because of the pandemic, real -life interaction was restricted.” Haichi saw this situation as a chance to “prove that I could support kids without physically being there.” He saw that the online world offered educational opportunities and a place for kids to meet inspiring teachers.
Long before the pandemic, Haichi was aware of the gap between kids whose parents could send them to cram school and those who couldn’t. “Before going on YouTube, I was teaching at a cram school that gave individual tutoring. Some of my students were from single-parent homes and I could see that the cram school fees were a burden for them. It was unfair, and motivated me to launch @toaruotoko. I wanted to provide a space where everyone could learn without having to pay for the experience.”
For a while, Haichi taught at the cram school to make a living, while also teaching online to reach the kids who couldn’t go to cram school. In 2012, he decided to concentrate his energies on his online work.
“The Japanese educational system is becoming more liberal,” says Haichi. But he knows that parents still want their children to get into top-tier schools and universities. “And the children want to please their parents. Doing well on entrance exams is important to everyone. In Japan, people still need cram school.” Haichi sends his own son to cram school. He believes it fills gaps in the learning curriculum that regular school cannot cover.
“There’s so much potential in online or video teaching,” says Haichi. “In the future, I would love to reach the kids in developing countries, where not everyone can get an education. That has always been my dream.”

葉一さんは登録者217万人以上を持つ教育系YouTuberである。東京学芸大学を卒業後、ずっと教育に情熱を注いできた。2012年にYouTubeチャンネル「@toaruotoko」を開設して以来、小学生から高校生まで数多くの生徒を指導してきた。 葉一さんの授業は、わかりやすく学習者に優しいことで評判である。2020年以降は、授業を教えるだけでなく、生徒の相談に乗りアドバイスする活動にも取り組んでいる。また、講師やラジオパーソナリティとしても活動している。 「2020年、コロナ禍はすべてを変えました。特に子どもや10代の若者にとっては大きな影響でした」と葉一さんは説明する。「あらゆる場所でストレスが増え、家庭の多くでは収入が減少しました。親が学費を払えなくなったために私立学校に通う計画を諦めたと話してくれた子どももいました」。 人間関係やいじめなどの個人的な悩みを相談に来た生徒もいました。「多くの子どもたちが困って助けを必要としていることを感じました。しかし、コロナ禍のため対面での交流は制限されていました」。葉一さんはこの状況を「物理的に現場にいなくても、子どもたちを支えられることを証明するチャンス」と捉え、オンラインの世界が教育の機会や、子どもたちが元気づけられるような教師に出会える場になることを見いだした。 コロナ禍以前から、葉一さんは塾に通える子どもとそうでない子どもの間にある教育格差を意識していた。「YouTubeを始める前、個別指導の塾で教えていました。その中にはひとり親家庭の生徒もいて、塾の費用が負担になっていることがわかりました。それは不公平であり、@toaruotokoを立ち上げる動機になりました。費用をかけずに誰でも学べる場所を提供したかったのです」。 葉一さんは、しばらくは生計を立てるために塾で教えながら、塾に通えない子どもたちにオンラインで指導を行なった。2012年、葉一さんはオンライン活動に専念することを決めた。 「日本の教育制度は徐々に寛大になっています」と葉一さんは言う。しかし、親は子どもを有名校やトップ大学に進学させたいと考えており、子どもも親を喜ばせたいと思っている。「受験で成果を出すことは、誰にとっても重要です。日本ではまだ塾は必要なのです」。葉一さん自身も息子を塾に通わせており、学校の授業だけでは補えない学習の穴を埋めると考えている。 「オンラインや映像を使った教育には大きな可能性があります」と葉一さんは語る。「将来的には、すべての子どもが教育を受けられるわけではない、発展途上国にも届けたい。それが私の夢です」。
