Investors sold technology stocks across the globe on Jan. 27. They did this because they were worried about the rise of the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek.

The Nasdaq fell 3.1% on the 27th. Leading company Nvidia’s shares dropped 16.9%, a record one-day loss.

DeepSeek launched its free AI model in late January. It is said to use less data at much less cost than its competitors. By Jan. 27, the AI assistant had overtaken U.S. rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple’s App Store.

China is proud of the company’s success. Some see it as a sign that the country is pushing back against U.S. efforts to limit its tech industry.

The first ChatGPT-like model, made by Chinese company Baidu, was a disappointment. But the high quality and cost-efficiency of DeepSeek have changed that.
