On June 25, the Chang’e-6 lunar probe landed back in China. This made China the first country to bring back samples from the moon’s far side.

The reentry capsule landed at 2:07 p.m. Beijing time. It carried lunar soil collected earlier that month from the moon’s South Pole-Aitken Basin. This part of the moon always faces away from the Earth.

The Chang’e-6 probe was launched on May 3 from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center.

On June 27, Chinese space officials said they welcomed scientists from around the world to study the lunar rock samples. However, they said there are limits, especially with the United States. Working with the United States would require the removal of an American law that bans direct cooperation between the two countries.
