Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida gave a speech at the United States Congress on April 11. He promised that Japan will work together with the U.S. to keep the international order.
“Freedom and democracy are currently in trouble around the world,” Kishida said in English. He mentioned actions by countries such as China that challenge the current international order.
Kishida said the U.S., which has played a big role in keeping the international order, “should not be expected to do it all” without help. “The people of Japan are with you, side by side,” he went on.
Kishida is the fifth Japanese prime minister to give a speech to Congress. He is also the second to give a speech to a joint session of Congress. Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the first in 2015.

日本の岸田文雄首相は4月11日、アメリカ議会で演説を行なった。彼は国際秩序を維持するために日本がアメリカと協力することを約束した。 「現在、世界中で自由と民主主義は危機に瀕しています」と岸田は英語で述べた。彼は中国などの国が現行の国際秩序に挑戦している行動に触れた。 岸田首相は、国際秩序の維持に大きな役割を果たしてきたアメリカについて、（他国の）助けなしで「あらゆることをするのを期待されているわけではない」と述べた。「日本の人々はあなたと肩を並べています」と彼は続けた。 岸田首相は、議会で演説した日本の首相としては5人目であり、また合同会議で演説した2人目でもある。2015年に安倍晋三前首相が最初だった。
