Kokugakuin Kugayama Junior High/High School is a revered institution of learning. Located in Kugayama, which is a suburb of Tokyo, the school campus is green and spacious, with grounds that have fostered generations of soccer and rugby players, among other athletes.

Kokugakuin Kugayama is also known for its division of boy and girl students. Girls and boys study in different classrooms and at times have different curricula.

Launched in 2018, Koku­gaku­in’s CC (Cultural Communications) Class is offered to the girl students throughout their 6 years in Kuga­yama. CC’s aim is to foster a global mindset through understanding diversity　in Japan and across the world. Instead of memorizing vocabulary and grammar like in traditional English classes, students are encouraged to speak, read, and write on their own. In the CC classroom, English becomes a tool for self-expression, making friends and becoming aware of world problems. It also provides a chance to interact with foreign students who visit Kugayama as part of CC’s Global Studies Program.

Global Studies is the heart and soul of CC. Held 2 hours a week, the topics taught in the class are called “units” and they are all about experiences and interaction. For example, first-year junior high students start by learning how to introduce themselves in English. By the end of the unit, even though most of them had never spoken English before, they become good at writing their self-introductions and reading them out loud. At the end of the unit, they can share this information with visiting foreign students.

Grade Master Tomohisa Takahashi says: “The students here are not returnees and many of them come into contact with English for the first time. They feel a real joy when, at the end of the unit, they can use their speaking skills with native speakers who come to Kugayama. The students have fun and that’s wonderful to see.”

English teacher Nami Kaneko says that “CC not only teaches language but also raises awareness of global issues, which is important for student growth. On the other hand, we do have a solid system of English studying based on entrance exams, which is also crucial. A program like CC is a launchpad to next-level English.”

Kugayama alumni Kaede Tokumaru, a freshman at International Christian University, says that six years in CC was one of the factors that got her there. “Being aware of issues like the war in Ukraine and discussing what we as students can do about it, helped change my perspective. I learned to research deeply online, present my findings and listen to others. The important thing is to keep the discussion going.”

國學院大學久我山中学高等学校は、伝統ある学びの場である。東京の郊外、久我山に位置するこの学校のキャンパスは緑豊かで広々としている。サッカーやラグビー選手をはじめ、多くのスポーツ選手を育成してきた。 國學院久我山は、男女別学でも知られている。男女は異なる教室で学び、時には異なるカリキュラムが組まれている。 2018年に始まった「CC（カルチュラル・コミュニケーション）クラス」は、女子生徒向けに提供されており、6年間にわたり受講することができる。このクラスの目的は、日本や世界の多様性を理解することを通してグローバルな視点を育むことである。従来の英語のクラスのように単語や文法を暗記するのではなく、生徒たちは自ら話し、読んで書くことを勧められる。CCクラスでは、英語は自己表現のツールとなり、友達を作ったり、世界の問題に気づいたりするための手段である。また「グローバルスタディズ」の一環として、訪問する外国人学生との交流の機会を持つこともできる。 「グローバルスタディズ」はCCの中心的な科目であり、週2時間行なわれる。このクラスのトピックは「ユニット」と呼ばれ、体験や交流が重視されている。例えば中学1年生は、まず英語で自己紹介をする方法を学ぶ。ほとんどの生徒が英語を初めて話すにもかかわらず、ユニットの終わりには、自己紹介文を書き、それを声に出して読むことができるようになる。ユニットの最後には、外国人学生に対して自己紹介することができる。 学年主任の高橋知尚さんは、「ここに通う生徒の多くは帰国子女ではありません。初めて英語に触れる生徒も多いです。ユニットの終わりに、久我山に来るネイティブスピーカーと英語を使って話せるようになると、生徒たちは本当に楽しそうなんです。その姿を見て感動します」と述べている。 英語教師の金子那美さんは、「CCは言語を教えるだけでなく、グローバルな課題に対する意識も育てます。これは生徒の成長にとって重要なことです。その一方で、受験英語に基づいたしっかりとした英語学習システムも用意しています。CCのようなプログラムは、次のレベルの英語力への足がかりとなります」と語る。 國學院久我山の卒業生であり、現在は国際基督教大学の1年生である得丸かえでさんは、CCでの6年間の学びが現在の進路に大きな影響を与えたと語る。「ウクライナ戦争のような問題について意識し、それに対して私たち学生ができることを話し合ったことで、視点が大きく変わりました。オンラインで深く調べ、結果を発表し、他の人の意見に耳を傾けることを学びました。大事なのは、議論を続けることだと思います」と述べている。
